I put on big girl clothes (wut iz this business attire you speak of??) and walk over to the Royal Academy of Engineering, where folks from RAE have organized a Microsoft-sponsored student day gathering around 60 engineering students from around the world to tackle one of 6 global challenges. After splitting up into groups consisting of undergraduate and graduate students from all over the U.S. and U.K., we hear from industry professionals everyone from the guy who designed the 2012 Olympics velodrome to an academia spin-out company founder who teach us principles about design and presentation. On my team are students from London, Chicago, Ohio, and even an MIT alum who also worked in the Langer lab! We get roughly 5 hours to come up with a design pitch of a solution to one of the global challenges, and then have to present it to a team of mock angel investors who will select a team to present to the RAE, National Academy of Engineering, and Chinese Academy of Engineering-sponsored 400-person conference on Wednesday. Basically, we had about 5 hours to solve the worlds problems. NBD. Well our team ends up not doing too shabby, as we win the thing, despite us literally coming up with an idea 30 minutes before the pitches were supposed to happen and as I literally doodled a Powerpoint presentation together minutes before we went up to present. Monday night: A hilarious dinner with rowdy Americans, Brits, an Italian, and a Cypriot. I wish I had photos now but youll have to hold on and trust me on this one. Meeting new people = the best. I met so many thoughtful folks from all over the world, from so many universities, all trying to make the world a better place. Never has it been more evident to me that it doesnt matter where you are so much as what you do. Tuesday: The other real reason why I came to London The first ever Global Grand Challenges Summit begins, as roughly 400 engineers gather to discuss how to literally solve the worlds problems.  This day and the following merit their own blog post, so worry not there will be LOTS more on this, I promise! But in a nutshell, I heard speakers ranging from Craig Venter (who I have some serious beef with, which made for an interesting experience) to MITs own Bob Langer (oh hey!), Angela Belcher, Neil Gershenfeld, to fashion designers, to FIRSTs Dean Kamen. Quick highlights: When Jeffery Sachs totally called out policymakers for their total bull when it comes to stiffling necessary innovation and doing good in the world, and then when Shells Environment VP had to follow him on the panel. AMEN to J. Sachs. When Neil Gersenfeld was trying to describe MIT to the audience and he said, MIT is a place where strange people who dont fit in anywhere else go. When will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas randomly showed up to the education panel and point-blank told the audience, Kids dont worship the people who are solving the worlds problems like they do athletes or movie stars, and its no ones fault but yours. I disagreed with some of the details, but agreed with the overall sentiment. When half the nerds at the conference didnt know who will.i.am was. Wednesday (Pi day): More conference! More speakers! More on this later! Our team presents to the conference and we even get some people e-mailing us about investing in the project. So, who knows where itll go? Figure 10. I pull out some papers I need to write and a manuscript I need to finish, but end up talking to the lady sitting next to me for hours. Turns out that shes from France, but flying to Boston from Vienna, and shes recently met one of my documentary professors from last year. The world is so small! We talk about Mozart, my research, her research (turns out she lectures at Harvard Medical School), and pastries. Like I said, meeting new people = the best. Figure 11. Go team! Thursday: I wake up in a bit of a daze and join my 20.380 team early in the morning to rehearse our design pitch (ack so many pitches!) and in an hour, we deliver it to the class. More class in the afternoon, a quick dinner, and I head over to Kresge Auditorium to join MITSO as we begin our first day of recording Rite of Spring. Saturday: Work work work to make up all the work I didnt do in London. Then I head over to WMBR to host my radio show (P.S. remember that one time I blogged about crossing off #12 on my senior bucket list? Well I loved hosting a radio show so much that I decided to apply to have my own, so now thats a thing.). Then more work! When the evening rolls around, I meet my friend, Steven, who has given me possibly the GREATEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT OF ALL TIME We end up having a hilarious conversation with a random Emerson College student on the #9 bus (again, meeting new people = the best), who ends up showing us the way to our destination Brighton Music Hall, where the Dropkick Murphys are about to play one of their annual St. Patricks Day/weekend concerts (which I get to witness because I have an awesome friend who knew what #5 on my senior buck list was). We squeeze in with a couple hundred diehard, Bostonian fans, and proceed to witness a most supreme show. So much noise. So much sweat. So many Bruins jerseys. So. Much. Fun. Also, can I just comment that punk musicians and fans are some of the most women-respecting and considerate people around? Really. And the guys in the band were incredibly nice, bringing people on stage at the end for Dropkick Karaoke, where they had fans pick songs to sing. I cannot think of a better way to ring in St. Patricks Day and my birthday. Figure 14. Is there anybody hooooommmmeee?? Sunday: For the first time, I actually go into Boston on St. Patricks Day, to meet up with a friend from middle school. I talk to some random people also trying to navigate their way to South Boston, but we end up giving up nagivating above ground because the parades have slowed the buses down. For once, Bostonians are friendly and awesome to talk to maybe St. Patricks Day has put everyone in a better mood? I proceed the next hour going in a circle because I accidentally get on the subway going the wrong direction, but eventually I DO make it over, find my friend, and toast to 22. The city is surprisingly civil and unrowdy, and I absolutely love seeing everyone dressed up in tacky amounts of green. I love it. Then its back to MIT where everyone seems to be wearing black (hahahaha) and where I finish up some work. Another study break ensues in the late evening as some of us head out to the Asgard, a nearby Irish pub, for one last hurrah before the week and see Tin Can Hooley, a local Irish band. According to the interviews I conducted my understanding was that a leader is more than just a title. The titles are important no objections about that, but they do not have much value when it comes to true leadership. True leadership cannot be awarded, appointed or assigned and that makes it priceless. However, many people do not really understand the meaning of leadership. When looking back to history there have been great leaders who did not hold high ranks (Moyles, 2006). For instance, Martin Luther King, Jr. leadership comes from influence and people have to earn it. Having to lead a mass of people requires more t han just the name manager . However, in terms of management it is true that most of the individuals who are awarded, assigned or appointed leadership positions have a key role in the society, and if true leadership is not in them, then at least some effort is required to create their leadership skills or else the team they are leading will be doomed (Kets, Korotov, 2011). However, after conducting several interviews I gathered some information that can be used by leaders in any organization. Below is a report on the qualities and skills managers should consider implementing if they are to be good leaders. 2 Influence of Leaders on the PerformanceThe most important aspect in a working environment is having an understanding relationship between the manager and the employees. There are various ways in which managers can determine the performance of a company such as behavior modeling, performance reviews, constructive feedback, among other methods which will be further discussed o n this report. However, these techniques are bound to fail if the manager does not try to find his employees motivations. Managers who are focused on controlling and commanding their employees are likely to inspire low loyalty and productivity than those who give the employees a certain degree of autonomy. * Behavior ModelingThough it may not be intentional managers', end up influencing the people who work under them. However, companies do not change for the better, unless the behaviors are modeled morally upright, trust and inclusion of the workers, an analysis by (Northouse, 2004). The moment these values take hold, workers feel motivated to act when they see them being compromised. Leaders who create this atmosphere influence greater loyalty and trust, and also prove that ego conflicts will not boost performance and morale. * Employee RecognitionBeing recognized for having archived something is important to employees as camaraderie and equity. Through interviewing several qualif ied managers, it was clear that, smart managers stay accustomed to these feelings and give a point of recognizing an employee's contribution, instead of criticizing them. Employees who feel appreciated have a higher chance of performing better than those who get once in an occasion compliment (Moyles, 2006). * Constructive FeedbackPeople do not have the same intellect and therefore they may not all progress at the same rate. As a result I learned that giving them a constructive feedback may help in leveling the field and improving their performance. This process requires evaluating why an employee is not meeting expectation, how they can be helped and working to coming up with a solution (Northouse, 2004). However, when dealing with negative areas, it is advisable to teach improvement suggestions using positive terms. * Informal MeetingsWithout feedbacks from employees from time to time, it is next to impossible to determine the type of performance that one expects. To avoid this u ncertainty, the manager should set regular meetings with the employees if possible outside the working area (Moyles, 2006). For example they can organize a meeting over lunch to reduce the tension of manager to employee. However, some topics may be hard to bring up but by doing so the employees will appreciate the effort and therefore strengthening their trust in their leader. * Performance ReviewsPerformance reviews provide ongoing freedom to measure employee's developments within a company. The review can be done twice every year to avoid repetition. The evaluation progress and requirements for improvement should be indicated in clear measurable conditions (Moyles, 2006) so that the workers can know their strengths and weaknesses. The manager is supposed to come up with a report on all the changes they may need the employees to make. This move reduces feelings of preservation, while allowing the manager to identify areas that need to be worked on. 3 How Leaders Can Help Others Thr iveWhen responding to my question on how leaders can be influence people, Mrs. Margaret Luther, President of Luther companies, said, as a leader one should be in a position to see beyond their greed. Therefore, leaders should be selfless and always ready to make sure that their employees are doing okay in terms of work and any other agenda that may come up. In this report, I will give various ways on which leaders can help their team to thrive in this world of increasing complexity. Below are some of points I gathered through the interview and can be used by leaders to help their team thrive. * Restrain the Urge to have all AnswersAs a leader avoid making your team feel as if it does not matter. Therefore, when asking questions ask them in such a way that the employees will feel as if you care about what they have to say. Additionally, do not ask straight questions instead encourage self-reflection and critical thinking. For example, instead of asking why do you not try this?  a sk: what method do you think might work best?  this gives the employees confidence when thinking of how a certain problem can be solved. Additionally, it increases self-reliability and minimize dependency. * Give Employees a Chance to Understand Each Other's WorkThis move goes beyond job ranks, functional metrics and mission statements. In a company people need to understand each other's responsibilities, pressure, challenges, goals and other factors. However, this can be hard since it is not easy to monitor all employees at the same time, but still there are a few ways that can be used to archive this act. For example, the manager can pair up employees into to two starting with the people who know nothing about each other's responsibilities. Additionally, introduce team meetings for the paired workers and let them come up with a report of what happens in the meeting. * Reward Risk-TakingIn any business people are encouraged to take risks and see how it goes. Therefore, managers should encourage their team to take chances and make strong decisions, with reasons. As a leader come up with parameters for your employees that will guide them on taking risks especially the ones they have to take individually. For example, your team leaders may want to organize a group of stakeholders to discuss pressing issues, but they the need the manager's support for the meeting to be a success. 4 Leadership Traits that Empower others to Implement the Leader's Vision * Understanding: Good bosses lead by example something most bosses do not do. Therefore, before the boss gets the chance to complain that a particular task was not done perfectly, they should at least do it and let their employees follow. * Fairness: As a leader one should be in a position to see right where there is bad. The level of inequality has been drastically reduced over, but it still exists today even though it may not be as obvious. One crucial turning point in the history of inequality is the time of slavery. This is when inequality could not have been higher because non-white people, especially African-Americans, had virtually no rights at all. A turning point on the opposite side of this spectrum would be the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and ‘60s. This is the time when segregation was outlawed, eliminating a large portion of racial discrimination and inequality in the United States. Even though the Civil Rights Movement helped the situation of inequality tremendously, racial inequality still exists, and there are no laws enforcing it, so it cannot be seen as clearly. Today, even though it cannot be seen as clearly, white people are likely to be accepted into a job or school over a non-white person. Also, whites are probably going to receive a better education than non- whites. Class is a defined as â€Å"people in similar social and economic positions, who have similar opportunities in life, and who would benefit by the same kinds of government policies† (Manza, Arum, Haney, 2013, p. 237).
